Upper Back and Rib Pain
Upper back pain can develop suddenly or build up gradually over time. Although it is often less disabling than low back pain, it can still make everyday activities such as sitting, reaching, lifting and twisting uncomfortable. Pain may be felt between the shoulder blades, across the rib cage, or around the chest wall, and can range from a mild ache to sharp, localised pain.
Because the ribs and diaphragm are closely connected to the thoracic (upper) spine, stiffness or irritation in this region can sometimes make deep breathing feel uncomfortable or restricted. While this can be alarming, it is often related to changes in the movement of the ribs, spine and surrounding muscles rather than a problem with the lungs or heart. During your assessment, your osteopath will identify whether your symptoms are musculoskeletal in origin or whether further medical investigation is required.
Upper back pain is rarely caused by a single factor. Reduced mobility of the thoracic spine or ribs, neck or shoulder problems, prolonged static postures, changes in activity levels, and muscle overuse can all contribute. Stress, poor sleep and other lifestyle factors may also influence muscle tension and pain sensitivity, affecting both the onset of symptoms and recovery.
A thorough assessment considers all of these contributing factors to build a clear understanding of your condition. Treatment is then tailored to your individual needs, with the aim of reducing pain, restoring movement and helping you return confidently to your normal activities.
How can osteopathy help?
The first step is to understand what is contributing to your upper back or rib pain. This begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history and daily activities, followed by a thorough examination of your thoracic spine, ribs, neck and shoulders. If there are any signs that suggest your symptoms are not musculoskeletal in origin, these will be identified and, where appropriate, you will be referred for further medical investigation.
Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include hands-on osteopathic techniques to reduce muscle tension, improve the mobility of the thoracic spine and ribs, and restore more comfortable movement. As the upper back works closely with the neck, shoulders and rib cage, treatment often includes these areas where they are contributing to increased stress or altered movement patterns.
Exercise is an important part of treatment. You will be prescribed a personalised programme to improve thoracic mobility, shoulder strength and flexibility, helping you regain confidence in movement and gradually return to work, exercise and everyday activities. Where appropriate, breathing exercises may also be included to improve rib cage mobility and reduce feelings of stiffness or restriction.
Advice on activity modification, workstation ergonomics, lifting techniques and lifestyle factors may also form part of your treatment plan. Stress, sleep and physical activity levels can all influence muscle tension and pain, so these factors are considered where they may be affecting your recovery.
The aim of treatment is not simply to relieve pain, but to improve your understanding of your condition, restore normal movement, and help you return to the activities that are important to you while reducing the likelihood of future episodes.
