Arthritis treatment for people in Kensal Green, Kensal Rise, Willesden, Queens Park and Harlesden

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and can affect any joint, although it is particularly common in the knees, hips, hands and spine. It involves gradual changes to the cartilage, bone and other tissues within the joint that develop over time.
Although these structural changes can contribute to pain and stiffness, they do not always reflect the severity of symptoms. Many people with significant arthritic changes on X-rays have very little pain, while others experience symptoms despite only mild changes. This is why treatment focuses on improving how the joint functions rather than simply the appearance of the joint on a scan.
The most effective treatment usually combines education, exercise and activity modification. Improving the strength of the muscles around the affected joint, restoring movement where possible and addressing stiffness or weakness in neighbouring joints can all help reduce pain, improve function and make everyday activities easier.
Hands-on osteopathic treatment may help reduce pain, improve joint mobility and make movement more comfortable, allowing you to engage more effectively with your rehabilitation programme. Where appropriate, advice will also be provided on pacing activities, weight management, footwear and strategies to help you remain active with confidence.
The aim is not simply to reduce pain, but to improve your ability to move, stay active and continue doing the activities that matter most to you.
How can osteopathy help?
Treatment begins with a thorough assessment to understand how osteoarthritis is affecting you and identify the factors contributing to your pain and reduced mobility. As well as examining the affected joint, I assess how the surrounding joints and muscles are functioning, as improving movement elsewhere can often reduce the load placed on an arthritic joint.
Hands-on osteopathic treatment may be used to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, ease pain and make movement more comfortable. Although treatment cannot reverse the structural changes associated with osteoarthritis, it can help improve how the joint functions and make it easier to stay active.
Exercise rehabilitation is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis. You will be given an individualised programme to improve strength, flexibility, balance and confidence in movement. Exercises are practised during your appointment, and video demonstrations are provided for reference at home.
Practical advice on pacing activities, managing flare-ups and modifying everyday tasks may also be provided, helping you remain active while avoiding unnecessary aggravation of your symptoms. Where appropriate, guidance on weight management, footwear and walking aids may also be discussed.
The overall aim is to reduce pain, improve mobility and help you maintain an active, independent lifestyle, enabling you to continue doing the activities that are important to you.
