Hip pain
Hip pain can develop gradually or come on suddenly following an injury or a change in activity. It may be felt around the front, side or back of the hip, and can sometimes be accompanied by pain in the buttock, groin, thigh and low back.
Common causes of hip pain include muscle or tendon problems, joint irritation, osteoarthritis and pain referred from the lower back. Tendinopathies around the hip, particularly of the gluteal tendons, are also common. These can cause pain on the outside of the hip, particularly when walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg or lying on the affected side.
Tendinopathy can become more common during and after menopause. Changes in oestrogen levels can affect tendon health and recovery, meaning that some women may develop new or persistent tendon pain around this time. The hip is one of the areas commonly affected, although other factors such as changes in activity, strength and load are also important.
How can osteopathy help?
Treatment begins with a thorough assessment to understand what is contributing to your hip pain. This may include looking at the movement and function of your hip, lower back and pelvis, as well as your strength, activity levels and the loads being placed on the affected tissues.
Treatment may include hands-on techniques to help improve joint and soft tissue movement, together with advice on modifying activities that may be aggravating your symptoms. Where appropriate, exercises will be prescribed to improve strength, mobility and the capacity of the affected muscles and tendons to tolerate everyday activities.
For tendinopathy, gradually increasing the load through the tendon is an important part of recovery. Your exercise programme will therefore be tailored to your symptoms and progressed as your strength and tolerance improve.
The aim is not simply to reduce pain, but to help you understand your symptoms, restore function and return confidently to the activities that are important to you.
