Neck pain
Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that affects people of all ages. It may develop suddenly, perhaps after waking with a stiff neck or following an awkward movement, or it can build up gradually over time. Many people associate neck pain with prolonged desk work, poor posture or stress, although it can also occur following a sporting injury, road traffic collision or other trauma.
Pain may be felt only in the neck or spread into the shoulders, upper back or between the shoulder blades. Some people also experience headaches or stiffness that makes it difficult to turn the head. While neck pain can be extremely uncomfortable and worrying, particularly if it is severe or restricts movement, the vast majority of cases are not caused by serious underlying disease.
In most cases, neck pain does not require an X-ray or MRI scan. A thorough assessment by an osteopath or physiotherapist can determine whether imaging or referral for further medical investigation is appropriate, or whether it is safe to begin hands-on treatment and a rehabilitation programme.
Recovery varies from person to person and is influenced by several factors, including physical activity, muscle strength, sleep, stress and general health. Although many episodes improve within a few weeks, some people develop persistent symptoms that benefit from a more comprehensive approach to treatment.
At Alison’s osteopathy clinic in Kensal Rise, West London, a detailed assessment is used to identify the factors contributing to your neck pain. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, helping to reduce pain, restore movement and improve your confidence to return to work, exercise and everyday activities.
How can osteopathy help?
The first step is to understand why your neck is painful and what factors may be contributing to your symptoms. This begins with a detailed discussion about your pain, medical history and lifestyle, followed by a thorough examination to assess the movement of your neck, upper back and shoulders. If there are any signs that suggest further medical investigation is required, these will be discussed with you and, where appropriate, you will be referred for imaging or to your GP.
Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include hands-on osteopathic techniques to reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility and restore more comfortable movement. As the neck works closely with the upper back, shoulders and rib cage, treatment often includes these areas where they are contributing to increased stress on the neck.
Exercise is an essential part of treatment. You will be prescribed a personalised programme designed to improve the strength, flexibility and endurance of the muscles that support the neck. Improving the neck’s capacity to tolerate the demands of work, driving, exercise and everyday life is key to reducing pain and helping prevent future episodes.
Lifestyle factors such as prolonged desk work, stress, sleep quality, physical activity and general health can all influence neck pain and recovery. Where appropriate, practical advice will be provided to help you make simple, sustainable changes that support your rehabilitation.
The aim of treatment is not simply to relieve pain, but to improve your understanding of your condition, restore confidence in movement and help you return to work, sport and the activities that are important to you.
