The Ankle

Tendon pain

The tendons around the foot and ankle commonly become painful, particularly on the inside or outside of the ankle or at the back of the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches to the calf muscles. Tendon pain often develops following an increase in walking, running or sporting activity, but it can also occur without any obvious change in activity levels.

Tendons become irritated when the loads placed upon them exceed their capacity to tolerate them. Successful treatment involves identifying the factors that have contributed to the problem. This may include reduced strength, changes in movement patterns, stiffness or weakness elsewhere in the body, or training errors.

Treatment focuses on improving the function of the foot and ankle while also addressing the hip, pelvis and trunk where necessary. A progressive strengthening programme is usually an essential part of recovery, together with advice on modifying activity so that the tendon can recover whilst remaining as active as possible.

Ankle sprains

Ankle sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries and benefit from early assessment and treatment. Although many people expect them to heal naturally, inadequate rehabilitation can lead to ongoing instability, reduced confidence in the ankle and an increased risk of recurrent sprains, sometimes months or even years after the original injury.

Treatment aims to reduce pain and swelling, restore normal joint movement and improve strength, balance and coordination. A structured rehabilitation programme helps ensure a safe return to everyday activities and sport whilst reducing the likelihood of future injury.

Insoles and orthotics

In some cases, temporary wedges or insoles can be a useful addition to treatment. These may help reduce excessive stress on painful tissues, improve comfort during rehabilitation and support recovery from certain foot, ankle, lower leg and knee conditions. Where appropriate, advice will also be given regarding footwear and training modifications.
